Integrated Dermatology Group of Reston

If you are dealing with blushing or red skin, visible blood vessels in your face, and small bumps, you may have a rosacea flare-up.  While there is no cure there are some options for how to treat rosacea.  Treatment can help to control and reduce symptoms so you can look and feel your best!

If you’re not sure if you’re dealing with rosacea, acne, or other skin problems, we recommend scheduling a consult for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

What Causes A Rosacea Flare Up

While the cause of rosacea is unknown, there are a few things that are known to cause a flare-up:

  • Hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
  • Temperature extremes
  • Sun or wind
  • Emotions and stress
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
  • Some cosmetic, skin or hair care products

Being aware of these and reducing them when you can will help to minimize symptoms.

You are also more likely to have rosacea if you are female, have skin that burns easily, are over 30, have a history of smoking, or have a family history of rosacea.

How To Treat Rosacea At Home

There are a few ways you can try to treat your rosacea at home.

  1. Always wear sunscreen.  Sun exposure can contribute to flare-ups.
  2. Try essential oils.  Tumeric, chamomile, tea tree oil, and lavender have all been shown to improve skin conditions.  Be sure to use a carrier oil.
  3. Change your diet.  Include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet like kale, ginger, and avocados.
  4. Use gentle, non-drying cleansers and a fragrance-free moisturizer.  Keep your skincare routine simple.
  5. Talk to your doctor about medications.  If you are using topical steroids, vasodilators, or beta-blockers, find out if there are alternatives you could take instead.
