How Can I Find Pregnancy Safe Treatments For Acne

If you are newly pregnant, you know that you’ll be experiencing lots of upcoming changes in your body.  While many of these are fun and exciting, there can be some that are unpleasant, like changes in your skin.  An increase in hormones can cause breakouts and skin issues.  At a time when health is your priority, you need to know what pregnancy safe treatments for acne are available.

What Skincare Products To Avoid While Pregnant

Unfortunately, some of your favorite skin care and acne treatments may not be safe to use during pregnancy.  Even though they are applied topically, skincare products are absorbed into the skin and could affect the baby.

Prescription retinoids and over-the-counter retinols should be avoided during pregnancy.  Many doctors also recommended discontinuing use of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

If you aren’t sure if your products are safe, it’s best to make an appointment with your dermatologist to discuss your options.

  • Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser.  Over cleansing can increase oil production, which you want to avoid.
  • Use a clean washcloth and towel when washing your face.
  • Change your pillowcase often.
  • Use earbuds instead of your phone when possible and avoid touching your face.
  • Avoid the temptation to pop pimples, which can cause scarring.
