Everything You Need To Know About Mohs Surgery

When you are diagnosed with skin cancer from a skin cancer exam, consider Mohs surgery in Reston, VA to preserve the skin on your face. Mohs surgery is the most effective treatment if you have been diagnosed with basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) or squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs).  These are two very common types of skin cancers.  This procedure aims to remove all cancerous cells while leaving as much healthy tissue as possible and minimizing scarring.

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is performed in 3 steps.

  1. Numb the area.  The doctor will examine you and administer a local anaesthetic to keep the procedure as comfortable and pain free as possible.  The affected area will be numb, but you will remain awake.
  2. Remove the cancerous cells.  Using a scalpel, the doctor will remove a thin layer of cancerous tissue and take it to the lab to be examined while you wait.  This process will be completed until no cancerous cells remain.  Depending on how many rounds are needed, the procedure can take several hours.
  3. Repair the wound.  After all the cancer cells have been removed, the surgeon will close it with stitches, a skin flap, or a skin graft.  Depending on the repair needed, you may also see a plastic surgeon for your wound repair following the Mohs surgery.

How Long Does It Take To Heal?

Plan to rest and relax for the first 48 hours following your procedure.  You should not experience much discomfort and can take acetaminophen for any pain.

Your doctor will provide you with wound care and follow up instructions to ensure the best healing process.  You can expect to fully heal within four to six weeks depending on the size of the wound.  The scar will continue to minimize over the next few months.
