Melasma Treatment in Northern Virginia

Summer means fun in the sun, days spent at the pool or beach, and playing at the park.  But all that time in the sun and heat can also trigger your melasma.  These dark brown or grayish spots on your face tend to make an appearance in the summer and can be challenging get rid of.  Many times, you need help from a dermatologist for melasma treatment in northern Virginia.

Why Does Melasma Get Worse in the Summer?

You know that melasma gets worse in the summer, but why does that happen?  UV rays stimulate melanocytes, which produces melanin.  If you have melasma, this can lead to uneven, patchy pigmentation on your face.

Even if you know that the sun is a trigger for melasma and are diligent with daily SPF, the heat from the sun can also be a trigger that causes your melasma to worsen.  If heat causes your melasma to increase, you may also want to avoid hot yoga studios, saunas and steam rooms.

Dermatologist Recommended Melasma Treatment in Northern Virginia

Persistent melasma can lead you to the dermatologist for help in finding a solution for brighter, more even toned skin.

The first step in treatment for many patients is to try a prescription strength cream to help improve the appearance of their skin.  These are non-invasive and effective for many patients.  Your doctor may recommend a lightening agent like hydroquinone.  Kojic acid or azelaic acid with corticosteroids can also help to lighten dark patches.  Tretinoin and a mild corticosteroid can also be used for treatment of melasma.

Laser Treatments for Melasma

If medications aren’t getting you the results you’re looking for, your dermatologist may recommend laser treatments.  These offer a targeted approach for reducing the appearance of dark spots on your face.  Fractional laser resurfacing and intense pulsed light (IPL) are both effective for melasma treatment in northern Virginia.

Your doctor will be able to make a recommendation for which treatment is right for you based on your skin concerns and desired downtime.  Both treatments typically require multiple sessions for full results.

Is There a Cure for Melasma?

Unfortunately, melasma is not a curable condition and while treatments will help, melasma could return when triggered by sun or heat.  Always wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days.  Wide brimmed hats can provide additional protection to help keep your skin clear and bright.
