When it comes to achieving a clearer and smoother complexion, many patients are familiar with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Fraxel as popular and effective treatment options.
While both procedures can improve superficial sun damage and skin pigmentation, there are some key differences between these two non-surgical technologies.
Before undergoing IPL or Fraxel, it’s important to understand how each treatment works, its indications, and expected results. So, which one is right for you?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive device that uses broad spectrum light to target pigmentary and vascular issues in the skin.
It works by emitting energy, that’s absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, to neutralize discoloration on the face, chest, and neck.
Fraxel is a non-ablative laser that uses fractionated energy to create microinjuries in the skin’s surface.
This controlled thermal damage initiates a wound healing effect and stimulates the growth of collagen and skin remodeling.
IPL is often recommended for freckles, sun spots, melasma, hyperpigmentation, broken blood vessels, and rosacea.
It’s level of penetration is more superficial and, therefore, it’s not recommended for issues that reside in the deeper layers of skin.
Comparatively, Fraxel is ideal for deeper or more significant pigmentary concerns, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, overall tone and texture, and stretch marks.
Patients that are focused on achieving an even and clear complexion are typically pleased with IPL results. This treatment is able to reduce redness, eliminate visible blood vessels, break down hyperpigmentation, and repair superficial sun damage.
It is not the best choice for patients that want to boost collagen or correct wrinkles and acne scars.
On the other hand, Fraxel provides excellent effects for smoothing wrinkles and acne scars and rejuvenating the face with the formation of new collagen, elastin, and blood vessels.
Proper post-care and sun protection are essential to preserve the effects of either procedure.
For IPL, most patients require a series of 3-4 monthly sessions, and then maintenance treatments twice a year.
With Fraxel, optimal effects are usually noted after a series of 3-5 monthly sessions. To combat wrinkles and keep skin smooth and soft, patients may need touch-up treatments every 1-2 years.
